An AI-Aware Content Audit: What to Check Before You Rewrite
A content audit does not have to begin with a complete rewrite. Often the most valuable work is identifying which pages are useful, which are misleading and which simply need a clearer explanation.
Give each page one clear purpose
Create a list of your important pages and write one sentence describing what each helps the reader do. If you cannot identify a purpose, investigate before producing more text.
A service page may help someone decide whether to enquire. An article may help them compare approaches. Those purposes need different structures, so judging both by the same word-count target is rarely useful.
Check factual accuracy first
Look for outdated services, unsupported claims, broken contact details and examples that sound like real results but are not documented. These issues deserve attention before polishing the tone.
A hypothetical Australian content agency might discover an old article that still advertises a service it no longer provides. Its first task is to correct the offer and related links, not insert more search phrases into the page.
Read the page as a first-time visitor
Ask whether the opening explains the subject without relying on knowledge of your business. Check whether headings help a reader find the relevant answer. Note unexplained abbreviations, long detours and paragraphs that repeat the introduction.
This is where an AI tool can assist by flagging potential ambiguity in supplied text. Treat the flags as suggestions for a human editor to assess, not automatic instructions to rewrite everything.
Inspect evidence and useful detail
A page can be grammatically correct and still add little. Look for a practical example, an explanation of a trade-off or a decision step the reader can use. Remove decorative claims that contribute no information.
- Does a source actually support the statement beside it?
- Is a quotation accurate and appropriately brief?
- Are business claims backed by approved information?
- Are illustrative examples labelled?
- Are relevant images described accurately?
Choose keep, edit, combine or remove
Keep a page that serves its purpose. Edit when the purpose is sound but the information needs work. Combine overlapping pages when one stronger resource would be more useful. Remove a page when it no longer has a useful role, after considering existing links and a relevant replacement destination.
Do not redirect every removed article to an unrelated homepage simply to avoid an error page. A redirect should make sense for the person following the old link.
Prioritise by impact and effort
Start with pages closest to a real customer decision, especially where inaccurate information could create confusion. Keep a record of the change and its reason. Review analytics and enquiry feedback later, recognising that one edit does not prove a particular search outcome.
An AI-aware audit supports a clearer website. It does not require hidden instructions for models, invented expertise or pages written only to attract machine attention.
